You’ve tried everything. The diets, the meal plans, the “eat less, move more” advice. You’ve counted sins, points, calories, macros — and maybe even cried into a low-fat yoghurt. Still, nothing sticks.
You’re not lacking in will power and you’re not greedy – or any other negative message
It turns out the nutrition and health advice is broken.
Hi, I’m Sarah, founder of Nu:Way and a recovering food addict. I finally found freedom — not through starving myself or punishing workouts — but by eating real food that works with my biology, not against it.
For years, I tried everything. Dietitians. Therapists. Weight loss clubs. Food fellowships. Clean eating. Juice cleanses. Nothing worked — at least, not for long. I’d lose a bit, then rebound, often worse than before.
I was stuck in the binge–blame–starve cycle. And the worst part? I was convinced it was my fault. That I lacked discipline. That if I just tried harder, I’d be able to eat “normally.”
Sound familiar?
In so many ways, I didn’t know what was wrong with me. I hated being big, I never felt like me in baggy clothes. Was I insane? I knew HOW to lose weight – but could NEVER keep it off.
I mentioned food fellowships before and for those who don’t know, food fellowships are like 12-step programmes for food addicts – the same way Alcoholics Anonymous is a 12-step programme for people with a drink problem.
I’d been going on and off for two decades. Some offer very specific ‘meal plans’ – literally telling you what, when and how much to eat to recover.
Unsurprisingly it included taking sugar and flour off the menu. But still, I could not recover.
Cravings, food thoughts, feelings of deprivation were constant unwelcome companions. Leading to the inevitable ‘sod it’ button and eating sugar and carbs, then ballooning right up in weight again.
Over and over I “relapsed” into sugar and savoury carbs! Every meal was a battle. They told me I didn’t want it enough, or that I needed more therapy perhaps.
Over the years I would lose the weight (always through gritted teeth – never peacefully) only to crash back into big piles of the surgery stuff.
Over that time, I did learn a lot about how those of us with food issues react to certain foods. But it wasn’t until I came across a little-known food program that everything finally changed.
This one advocated taking out not only sugar and flour – but sugar, grains AND starch. For some of us - starch behaves in the body the same way as sugar.
If you suspected your cravings might be fuelled by insulin imbalances or carb sensitivity – this is for you.
It was a complete game-changer. The weight fell off in six months – and not through gritted teeth but with complete freedom and peace of mind.
Foods we naturally think of as healthy, like oats, humus and lentils were causing my cravings, making it impossible to stick to any meal plan for long.
Now, I’m in incredible shape, healthier than I’ve ever felt, and the best part is: I eat plentiful, delicious meals every single day!
Keeping the weight off has not only been easy - I continue lose, even though I’m no longer in the weight loss phase.
I adapted the Nu:Way Food Program from those 12-step food programmes I was part of for so long – but without the strict rules and regulations to make it accessible and sustainable.
I’d love everyone to recover their mojo around health, nutrition and plain old looking good!!
This is all explained in my book (see here) and in the 28 Day Challenge (link) which is a supported approach to the food plan.
In brief: once you have achieved your ideal weight, some foods are reintroduced on a trial-and-error basis.
For example, for me I have the occasional bit of toast and even chips without an issue. But I’ll never eat oats again, or humous or sweetcorn. Because it’s not worth the cravings they trigger.
There’s a growing body of research showing how some of us react differently to sugar and carbs — and how both the food and medical industries are complicit in the global obesity epidemic.
While you’re here, you can have a look at the blogs and articles that go into more detail about this. Or dive right in and get started on the 28-Day Challenge– reboot your nutrition and lose up to 14lbs in 28-Days.
Let me say that again: you do not need to exercise to lose weight on this plan.
Particularly for women over 40, who hate exercise and sweaty gyms (like me). This plan is a lifeline.
Movement is wonderful for health, but it is not required to get results here. We deal with the root cause: your food.
